Some of you may remember my lamenting the suckedness of my VCR and it's failure to record an episode of Stargate: SG-1. Well, I found a torrent of it and over the last week I downloaded it when I was in WiFi hotspots. I go the last bit of it last night while I was sleeping and saw it today. Good episode. Disturbing new bad guys, but a good episode. Glad I got to see it.

Now I'm watching Firefly. Odd show.

Ah, a report on the rice cooker stew (also I need to remember to remove that double post):

Didn't work out as well as I had envisioned it. Beef broth probably would have made the whole thing better, and I think i'd use wine instead of the beer. (red wine) (haha, I haven't had any beer, but if I hadn't gone back and edited that you might assume I had as I said "bear" instead of "beer" at first)

Anyway, the main problem, other than the fact that I ended up putting too much pepper and not enough salt (salt is easy to fix, at least) is that since the rice cooker basicaly has two settings (boil and warm) and it keeps the water at a boil until it boils off then when the temp starts to rise it flips to warm, the meat cooked too hot (water boils at 212 degrees f and beef is best cooked to 140-160, if you get it too hot it dries out). If you boil meat, as long as you keep the water at the temp you want your meat to cook to you can cook it for as long as you like with no trouble, but if you cook it too hot it'll get over-cooked and dry.

So a rice cooker isn't a good option for cooking things with meat in them.

The other ingredients, however, did really well. I suppose I could pan cook the beef sepperate and use beef broth in the stew itself and then combine the ingredients later.

I bet this brings back some memories for some of you!

Independance

Well today I cut off the last bit of financial support my parents had been giving me. Mom finaly got around to sending me the information for my student loan so that I can start paying it instead of them.

All through college I had their credit card to use for groceries and gas and they paid my car insurance and I was on their health insurance. They no longer pay for my car insurance or gas and I'm too old to be on their health insurance (which means I have none) any longer. I still have their credit card but I only use it when I'm buying computer parts for them.

In other news, the Social Security Administration office is a small bit of hell. I went to get my earnings report from 2000 adjusted and it took forever to get to the window for them to take my W2 and tell me they would take care of it. It took 30 seconds to take care of it but over an hour to get to the window.

Got a haircut today. It was needed. Feels good.

Right now I'm cooking a stew in my rice cooker. I don't really NEED a rice cooker to cook my stew in, nor do I need to cook stew in the rice cooker I have. But since I have it I decided to try it. I didn't really have a recipe to follow so I cut up the holy trinity (onions, bell peppers, and cellery -- it's a Louisiana thing) and let it sweat in the cooker for a bit with some salt. Then I added some strips of beef, some carrots, some rice, water, spices (ummm, garlic, pepper, oregano, basil, fresh rosemary, and fresh thyme), and a bottle of beer. Letting it simmer now. We shall see how it turns out.

Cat & Dog Meet

Brought the Goldie over to mom and dad's house for Sunday dinner and Becca brought her cat, Eisley over as well. The cat is currently cowering under the bed. Goldie is perfectly happy except for the fact that she wants very much to meet said cat and said cat is terrified to death of her.
