Alligator goes after swimming dog
When resident Tobi Evans took his dog Katz to the boat docks in Jackson, S.C., for a little afternoon cooling off in the Savannah River, he should have worn his steel reinforced bathing suit.
As reported by NBC 26 News’ Navideh Forghani, the swimming trip turned into a tussle with a three-and-a-half foot alligator. Evans said he had seen alligators there before but none had ever attacked. Evans jumped in to the water and his dog followed. When he saw his dog thrashing in an unusual manner, and he realized something was wrong.
“He was playing in the water, then I seen him rolling. But like he don’t roll. So I dove over there, I grabbed that alligator and I started whooping on him. He was whooping on my on my dog, I whopped on the alligator and everyone broke loose,” Evans told NBC 26 News.
Corporal Cary Davis of the S.C. Department of Natural Resources said that when he spoke with Evans, both he and his dog seemed fine other than a few scratches.
“It’s odd that an alligator of that size would attack him,” he said. “Generally an alligator will not attack anything larger than itself, and his dog was a full-sized German Shephard.” Davis said that he investigated the incident because the DNR has jurisdiction over any wild animal.
“It’s illegal to kill an alligator or mess with them,” he said. “I just wanted to find out the full story.” He also said officers will be monitoring the water for the alligator and if they find it, they will move it to another location.
